The Visitor : The Last Illusion
Inspiration Chapters : The Visitor (The Illustrated Man By Ray Bradbury)
“The Visitor” is a psychological tragedy set on Mars, where exiled patients suffering from the fatal “blood rust” disease struggle with despair and loneliness. Saul Williams, the protagonist, yearns deeply for Earth and the memories he left behind. Hope arrives in the form of Leonard Mark, an 18-year-old with telepathic abilities who can project perfect illusions of Earth, becoming the only source of comfort for the dying exiles.
Saul’s possessiveness and fear of losing Mark lead to conflict within the group, intensified by Johnson, an armed and volatile exile. In a chaotic struggle, Mark is accidentally killed, causing all of his beautiful illusions—New York, Earth, happiness—to collapse instantly. The survivors, including Saul, are left with unbearable despair and emptiness once their last hope is gone.
The central idea of “The Visitor” is an exploration of extreme human despair and the brutal consequences that arise when the last remaining source of hope is destroyed by greed. The story takes place on Mars, where exiles suffering from the disease known as “blood rust” are slowly dying in isolation, longing desperately for Earth.
In the midst of this hopelessness, Leonard Mark a man with the ability to create vividly realistic illusions offers those around him the experience of “returning to Earth.” His power becomes their only source of joy, knowledge, and emotional comfort.
However, Mark’s kindness is crushed by fear, possessiveness, and the desire for control. Saul Williams and the other exiles, driven by selfishness, escalate the tension into violence. This leads to tragedy: Mark is killed, and with him, the illusions their final refuge collapse.
All that remains is emptiness and a harsh, irreversible despair that no one can escape.

Characters

Saul Williams
Saul Williams is the main character and one of the exiles on Mars. He was sent there after contracting the disease known as “blood rust,” which causes death within a year . He is a tall man whose body has grown extremely thin due to his illness . Saul feels intensely isolated and hopeless, longing deeply for even a moment of what it feels like to be on Earth again

Leonard Mark
Leonard Mark is an 18-year-old newcomer to Mars, suffering from the same “blood rust” disease as the other exiles. Despite his condition, he appears bright, healthy-looking, with blond hair. He possesses an extraordinary ability: telepathy and thought transference, allowing him to create vivid, multi-sensory illusions of Earth. These illusions become the exiles’ only source of joy and hope. Although Mark wishes to share his gift freely, the others’ selfish desire to control him leads to his death — and all his illusions vanish the moment he dies.

Johnson
Johnson is one of the exiles on Mars, characterized by selfishness and violence.
He leads the resistance against Leonard Mark’s scheduling system and suggests using extreme torture—such as driving spikes under toenails or burning fingers—to force Mark to perform his abilities every night.
Mark later reveals that Johnson is insane and the only one in the group who carries a gun.
Johnson initiates the final outbreak of violence by shooting a man named Smith, and during Saul Williams’ attempt to take the gun from him, Mark is accidentally shot and killed, ending everyone’s last hope.

The Exiles
The Exiles are a group of men suffering from “blood rust,” exiled to Mars to slowly await their deaths. Their bodies have grown weak and painfully thin from the illness—some so pale they seem as if they might fade away at the slightest touch.
They live in isolation, finding comfort only in sleep, which is described as their one faithful companion. And whenever they wake, there is only one thing they talk about: Earth—its memories, the beauty of their past lives, childhood streams, or the city of New York.
